How do you get random people on the internet to remember your business?
We’re glad you asked. The answer is to have a professional-looking website that people can easily find and explore, when they’re searching online for businesses like yours. Lime can help you accomplish exactly that, and a whole lot more to boot.
At this point you’ve probably got dozens of questions on your mind. What is a “good” website design, anyway? How much does it cost to build a website in Australia? What’s the best website option for my business? Is it all really worth the trouble? And so on…
These are all great, pertinent questions. Rest assured, this page will answer every single one of them. But first, we’re going to answer an even more fundamental question: why on earth should you believe anything we say?
No, skip to the tech stuff, I already trust LVS
There are literally hundreds of thousands of options out there, from simple, free website builders, to intimidating web publishing systems, sketchy, fly-by-night “web designers”, and giant web agencies with six-figure retainers. And each of them has their own opinion on what you should do to get the “best” website. So why should you trust us?
Well, for many reasons, but above and beyond all else — we tell it like it is. Plain and simple. We recognise that we can’t be all things to all people, so we don’t even try to be. We will even talk ourselves out of a job if we see that some other option is a better fit for your needs. This isn’t just principle; in our experience, it’s also good business sense — people come back later when you do right by them.
But as we said, that isn’t the only reason to trust us. Here are the top six other factors why it makes sense to hire LVS to build your website:
Future-proof websites. Technology changes fast. What was state-of-the-art on the internet just five years ago, is often obsolete today. At LVS, we take measures to help your website mitigate such risks.
ROI-obsessed. No two businesses are alike. Even if they’re seemingly selling the same things to the same people, each has its own unique pain points and circumstances. Our proprietary discovery process enables us to equip you with the toolkit to address the challenges unique to your business, and deliver value for your money.
Fit-for-purpose. Sometimes, the best solution for a business is a one-page website for your fledgling startup. Sometimes, it’s a cutting-edge ecommerce platform with collaboration features for a team of 200. Most times, it’s something in between. Whichever the case, we’ll find the best fit for you; no more website for website’s sake.
Made in Australia. Since 2007, we’ve been headquartered in Melbourne. In that time, we’ve successfully completed more than 11,700 projects for clients big and small. We don’t outsource work to dodgy overseas contractors — we like to keep things right here in Straya.
Transparent pricing. When you sign up with Lime, we make it easy to understand what you’re paying for and why. No more mysterious monthly “maintenance” fees on websites that you hardly ever even need updates on.
Stellar support. We’re proud of the things we build and we stand behind them, one hundred percent. In the unlikely event that something goes wrong on a site we’ve built for you, our team is always at hand to support you.
Obviously, you shouldn’t just take our word for it. We encourage you to do more research on the subject — it can make a huge difference to your business, so the effort you spend arriving at the right choice will be well worth the time.
To that end, we’ve put together the most helpful guide imaginable to uncomplicate the subject of websites for businesses. Hundreds of hours of research and decades of our own experience have gone into compiling this guide. We hope you find it useful. And remember, if you still have a question we haven’t answered, you can also chat with our friendly support team — they’re always happy to help.
What is a website?
What is website design and development?
Web design and development is the process by which websites are built. Web design decides what a website looks like (the aesthetics), and web development dictates how it works (the functionality). In common usage though, non-technical people often use the term “web design” to refer to the entire process.
Is a website a software?
Is website design a software?
A website may make use of software for it to run, but websites are generally not considered to be software, even though some websites may contain ‘web apps’, which are basically pieces of software that run in a web browser. Website design is a process, not a software, although web designers and developers may also make use of specific software programs to build websites.
Is website design ecommerce?
Buying and selling anything on the internet – whether products or services – is referred to as “e-commerce”, short for “electronic commerce”. If people can buy (or sell) anything on a website, it’s called an ecommerce website. If you’re selling website design services (like we are), then you’re engaged in both website design and ecommerce!
Do I need a website?
Do I need a website for my small business?
How important is a good website for a business?
In general, yes, a website can be an important tool for a business to provide information or find new customers. There are a few businesses that do not have websites, but most serious businesses nowadays have their own websites. Studies show that 71% of consumers trust a business less if it doesn’t have a professional website (source).
Is it worth having a personal website?
If you want to present yourself in the best light to people who might be looking for you, including suppliers, recruiters, potential customers, or even journalists, having a website is a good idea.

How do I build a website for my small business?

How do I create my own website?
How can I design my own website?
There are two main approaches through which you can get a website. The first is the DIY approach, where you manage all the technical stuff yourself (or have your own team to do it), and design your website yourself. This is what most website-builder platforms offer.
The second is the full-service approach, where everything is taken care of for you, but you still retain control of your website and server. This is what Lime offers, and we believe it is the best option for most businesses, as it offers features, flexibility, and affordability. (But of course, we might be biased). For a more detailed look at the best website option for your business, see domain and hosting, website builders, CMSs, and HTML editors.
What is the easiest website to build?
In our tests, WordPress emerges as the easiest path to build a full-fledged website with all the features a business might conceivably need. As with any interface, new users will find that it has a bit of a learning curve. However, using number of clicks as a measure of ease-of-use, we find that WordPress is comparable to platforms such as Wix and Squarespace, with an average of 3.3 clicks to any feature / setting in WordPress, as against 3.5 in Wix and 3.0 in Squarespace. In addition, WordPress is also far more powerful and versatile than any drag-and-drop website builder, which explains why it powers 63.6% of all websites on the internet. And, why we recommend WordPress for our customers’ sites.
Is it easy to design a website?
How hard is it to design a website?
Can we make website without coding?
How long does it take to design a website?
How many hours does it take to design a website?
Drag-and-drop website builders make it possible to build a website without using any code. However, to prevent users from making changes that may break some feature or layout on the site, website builders like Wix and Squarespace are very restrictive, severely limiting what a user can or cannot do on their website. In our tests, new users typically took about 19 hours to design a website from scratch on Squarespace, and about 23 hours on Wix.
Hiring someone vs DIY
Should I make my own website or hire someone?
The decision to hire versus doing it yourself is based on three variables: the demands / premium on your time, the availability of professionals who will do it for you, and cost of each option. For most users building their own business website, we recommend hiring a professional. Lime has website packages starting from just $250, with annual renewal charges of $200.
This means that your cost for owning your own business website for three years costs about $216 per year with Lime. In contrast, website builders like Squarespace quickly become expensive, with the cost of a comparable website standing at $300 per year at minimum. In addition, website builder platforms also charge you transaction fees per every sale on your site. This means, if you ever want to accept online payments on your website for selling your products / services / appointments, you will end up having to pay the platform a commission on every sale.
For these reasons, we generally recommend hiring a professional as the most cost-effective option for businesses in the long run.
Basics: domain, hosting, and editing
What software do I need to create a website?
To build a website with HTML and CSS, you can use an HTML editor such as Adobe Dreamweaver or Google Web Designer. To build a website without code, you can use online platforms such as Wix, Squarespace, or Webflow. Considering the number of templates and plugins available for WordPress, you can also build WordPress website with very little code.
Do you have to pay to get a website?
Not necessarily. There are free options available, such as Google My Business Websites and Google Sites, although we generally advise against them because of the drawbacks they hold for businesses, ranging from ads on your website (including potentially ads promoting your competitor), to the inability to have your own domain name.
Why do I need to buy a domain?
Can I build a website without a domain name?
What is the difference between hosting and domain?
A domain name is the text that you type in to the address bar in your browser, to access a website. It usually takes the form, “name dot something”, where ‘name’ could be anything you choose, and the ‘something’ is what you select from a list of predefined options. For example, if you’re running a business called, “Mike’s Widget Repair”, you might choose a domain name like mikeswidgetrepair.com.au, or mikes.com – provided these names aren’t already taken by someone else.
Hosting is the place where your website lives, from where it is served to users who visit. It’s the place where all the text, code, and images are stored on a special type of computer that’s always connected to the internet (called a server, or virtual server). Think of hosting space like an apartment, and a domain name like the name of the street. The apartment is where you live, but unless people know the name of the street it’s on, they won’t be able to visit you.
It is possible to build a website without a domain name, using only the IP address (a number that identifies a computer connected to the internet, sort of like a phone number) of the server where your site is hosted. For example, you could type in 220.127.116.11 into your browser, instead of “google.com”, and you will still see the same website. But it’s a lot easier to remember “google.com” than a series of digits. Also, most websites are hosted on a shared server (many sites share the same IP address), so the server won’t know which site to display unless you specify the domain name.
How do I buy a domain and host?
At Lime, one year of domain and hosting are included for free when you sign up for any of our website packages. Most hosting providers sell both domain and hosting services. Both are services that you buy for a defined period of time, one year typically being the minimum. Based on your contract duration, the service provider will charge you a fee when it’s time to extend your domain / hosting services.
Can you just buy a domain name without hosting?
Yes. If you’re looking to buy only a domain name, Lime Domains provides an excellent set of domain management features and support for a wide variety of top-level domains (extensions like .com, .com.au, .net. .org, etc), at competitive prices. Full disclosure: lime.domains is our sister concern.
Can I register my domain with one company and host with another?
Yes. Mapping your domain’s DNS records will allow you to host your website with one provider, while your domain is registered with another. Most domain registrars nowadays provide a settings panel that allows users to adjust these DNS settings.
Does it matter where you buy your domain name?
Yes. There are a variety of factors that influence how easy and cost-effective it is to manage your domain with a given registrar. At the heart of it are domain management features, like the ability to edit your domain’s DNS records. Besides this, some service providers have hidden costs and fees, charging for a variety of “features” that others provide for free, including transfer fees, administration fees, and privacy fees. Some registrars may also subsidise your registration fees by selling your personal data to third parties. Lastly, some providers may offer poor or no customer support.
How much is a custom domain?
How much does a domain name cost per month?
In Australia, standard domains with extensions like .com, .com.au and .net, generally cost between $25 and $30 per year. “Premium domains” are basically domain names that have already been registered by somebody else, that they are then reselling, typically with a very high markup. Premium domains can cost anywhere from a few dollars to even seven-figures, the first time you buy them. Once you’ve bought them, however, thereafter you can renew them at normal rates like any other domain name.
Why is a domain so expensive?
Domain name registrars charge you for the service of keeping track of millions of domain names, and mapping which name points to which website. A lot of infrastructure is required to do this, which is what you pay for when you buy or renew a domain name.
Where is the best place to buy a domain name?
Where is the cheapest place to buy domain names?
We recommend lime.domains, because they provide an excellent set of domain management features, support for a wide variety of top-level domains (extensions like .com, .com.au, .net. .org, etc), at good prices. Also, when customers sign up for any website package with Lime Virtual Studio, this is done automatically, and no further action is required from you. Full disclosure: lime.domains is our sister concern.

How do I permanently buy a domain name?
When you sign up for any of the website packages on Lime Virtual Studio, you can get a free domain name of your choice, including .com, .com.au or .au. It is not possible to register a domain name for life, as ICANN, the authority that manages domain names, only allows domain names to be registered for a maximum of 10 years. Anybody who claims to offer a “lifetime” domain name is probably scamming people in some way. Once you register a domain name, you are the owner of that domain, but based on the duration of your contract, you will have to pay renewal fees to your provider periodically.
How do I choose a domain name for my business?
Is it better to have a .com domain?
Is .net or .com better?
Is .org a good domain?
Is .org reliable source?
We generally recommend choosing domains with .com or .com.au extensions, as surveys indicate that these are the domains that people trust the most in Australia. We recommend .com.au domains for Australian businesses as this is what the average person will assume to be part of the domain name. If your business is intended for international visitors as well, we recommend choosing a domain name that is available with both the .com as well as .com.au extensions. You can then choose which domain name shall be the primary web address, and set the other to auto-redirect to the primary address.
All .au domains need to represent an Australian individual or entity of a similar name. For businesses an ABN / ACN or Business Name Registration number must be provided (source). If your domain name is very important to you, we recommend trademarking your name as well.
When it comes to the name that precedes the extension — the part before the “.com”, “.com.au”, or whatever extension you choose – the general recommendation is that it is preferable to keep it shorter than 30 characters, and avoid hyphens and underscores. We also recommend names to contain no more than 4 keywords as additional words could be considered spam by Google bots.
Does my domain name have to be the same as my business name?
What if the domain name I want does not exist?
In Australia, if you want to use a .au extension, then your domain name must be the same as your business name. If you want to use a domain name that is not exactly your business name, you may have to choose an extension that does end in .au. In general, keeping your domain name the same as, or closely similar to, your business name, is a good idea.
If the name you want is not available, you can try slight variations on your domain name. For example, if your mikeswidgetrepair.com is not available, you could try the same name with a different extension, like .biz. Alternatively, you could try something like getmikeswidgetrepair.com, callmwr.com, or even mikefixeswidgets.com.
Is a premium domain worth it?
How much does a premium domain cost?
Is it worth buying a premium domain name?
Unless you are a very well established business with a brand name that thousands of customers recognise and trust, it generally isn’t worth buying a premium domain name. Businesses that are just starting out would be better off staying away from premium brand names — the money would serve you much better invested elsewhere, like your marketing.
Does Wix own my domain name?
Do I own my domain name with Bluehost?
Do I own my domain name with GoDaddy?
Do I own my domain name with Squarespace?
Once you register a domain name, you are the owner of that domain, but based on the duration of your contract, you will have to pay renewal fees to your provider periodically. If you wish to close your account with any of these providers, you can transfer to another domain registrar or hosting provider, which Lime can organise for you.
What do I do after I buy a domain name?
Once you buy a domain name, the next step is usually to configure its DNS records to point to the place where your website is hosted. If you have bought the domain and hosting from the same provider at the same time, this is usually configured automatically.
Can I design a website before hosting?
How much does it cost to host a website per year?
Yes, you can design a website before having to buy hosting. If you’re using a website builder, most will allow you to build your site with a free or trial plan, before you have to upgrade to the paid plan. At Lime, one year of free domain and hosting services are included with all our website packages, and at your request, we can activate this after your site is fully built. For a detailed breakdown of costs, please see our section with cost comparisons.
Can I build a WordPress website without hosting?
There are three ways in which you can use WordPress:
- Free site on WordPress.com
- Paid site on WordPress.com
- Download WordPress for free from WordPress.org to build a site on your own virtual server (or hire Lime to do it for you)
With option 1, you do not need to pay for hosting, but this is generally ill-suited for businesses, because you do not get your own domain name, and you also have to contend with WordPress displaying ads on your website (which could even be advertising your competitors, as you have no control over the ads).
With option 2, you do have to pay, although it isn’t billed as “hosting”, but rather as a variety of other features, like the ability to use your own domain, hide third-party ads, accept payments, and so forth. This tends to be quite expensive, compared to option 3.
When you sign up for a website package with Lime, you do get one year of domain and hosting free with your WordPress website.
Can I host my website on Google?
Does Google host websites for free?
Google provides three services with which you can “host” your website for free:
- Google My Business Websites
- Google Sites
All three options have various limitations, and are generally better suited to personal sites for individuals, rather than businesses. We generally recommend that businesses use self-hosted WordPress.
How can I host my website for free on Google Drive?
You can create a public folder on Google Drive and upload all your website’s files to the folder. With the permission settings set to “public on the web”, your website will be accessible to anybody on the internet. However, you will not be able to map your own domain name to this folder, and people will only be able to access your website via a very lengthy and unprofessional-looking link.
Can I host my own website?
Is it cheaper to host your own website?
How can I host a website on my computer for free?
It is possible to host a website on your own computer, but most businesses avoid doing this because of the many disadvantages that come with this method. If your own computer is acting as a webserver to host your website, you will have to ensure that your computer is always on and always connected to the internet.
At a minimum, this involves buying a dedicated IP from your internet service provider, as well as a special connection that does not throttle your bandwidth. You will also need to arrange power backup for your PC and internet. Without these, your website will become inaccessible whenever your computer is offline.
Doing all this ends up being far more expensive than signing up for hosting services with a large provider who enjoys economies of scale. When you sign up for any of the website packages with Lime, you get 1 year of hosting and domain services for free.
What should I look for in a website builder?
Aside from ease of use, here are the five most important factors to consider before choosing a website builder are:
- Availability of features: If you want to use your website to achieve something specific, like letting your customers book appointments, helping them generate quotations, or collecting their emails, you have to make sure that the website builder supports that feature.
- Performance: Does this provider have a data centre or CDN server close to your customers? If not, many of your customers could end up finding your website slow to load, and this is bad. Studies show that 40% of users will leave your site if it takes more than 3 seconds to load.
- Reliability: Users have reported frequent outages on some platforms like Wix. Use tools like pingdom to make sure that the service you are considering is reliable.
- Customer service: We’ve heard lots of complaints from people about bad experiences with customer support on various platforms. You can do a few searches on Twitter to find out what people are saying about the platform you’re considering.
- Cost: Ultimately, you’re investing in a website for your business, so it makes sense to expect the best possible return on your investment. Compare the cost of the platform you’re evaluating to that of other options to ensure you’re getting the best value for your money.

What are the disadvantages of Wix?
Website builders like Wix, Squarespace, and Weebly do a great job of letting users build websites without the need for code. But they do have a few disadvantages that you should know before you sign up:
- Limited features compared to WordPress. With more than 57,000 plugins on the official WordPress repository, there’s essentially no limit to what you can achieve with a WordPress site. In contrast, website builders are quite limiting. Want a slider with changing text on your homepage? Nope, can’t do it. Parallax effects with different images for PC and mobile? Sorry. Check out changes on a staging site before seeing it live? Not easy.
- Difficult or no migration. If you find yourself looking to move your website elsewhere — perhaps when your business has outgrown the site, or if you’re no longer happy with the platform’s pricing or services — it’s often difficult to move your website. You’ll probably have to do it manually, unlike with WordPress which offers a variety of tools with granular control over your content.
- Limited search engine optimisation. The way in which these platforms convert the formatting and layout you apply to your pages into code, often results in clunky, poorly optimised code that search engine don’t like. In addition, these platforms don’t allow control of things like URLs and redirects to follow SEO best practices.
What is the best website builder for SEO?
In our tests, Webflow was the platform that offered the maximum level of optimisation for SEO.
What is better than Wix?
No other platform can match the power and versatility of WordPress, which is why we build all websites with WordPress. However, if you are insistent on using a cloud-based website builder, we recommend Webflow as the best option for business websites.

Using Dreamweaver without a knowledge of HTML and CSS is possible but will only allow for webpages with an extremely limited set of layouts and feature sets. Dreamweaver may be available for free in the computer labs of some educational institutions. Students who want to use it on their personal computers must still purchase it, although discounts are available. Google Web Designer is a relatively new free alternative to Adobe Dreamweaver.

Getting traffic, ranking on Google
How do I attract customers to my website?
There are two ways to bring potential customers to your website. The first is through paid advertising, often called “digital advertising”, “display advertising”, or “search engine marketing”. Many companies sell advertising online, the biggest being Google and Facebook.
Your ads can be displayed on Google, Facebook, and millions of other pages across the internet. When people click on your ads, they will be led to a page on your website. This method is often quick and convenient – you can start an ad campaign in just a few hours – but in the long run, it can sometimes prove to be expensive. To run online advertising campaigns that attract thousands of customers, with the most carefully optimised budgets, check out Lime’s digital marketing services.
The second method to attract customers (“traffic”) to your website is by unpaid means. This starts with creating something that your customers find valuable. It could be entertainment value (like a GIF, funny video, or game), informational value (like a book, blog post, infographic), or even something inspirational (like a TED Talk). The next step is to help people find this content, which involves sharing what you’ve made in communities across the internet (social media, forums, websites, etc).
This method is often described as “content marketing”, “organic marketing”, or “search engine optimisation”. It is generally a slow process – it can take several months to build up a lot of traffic – but in the long run, it can become a huge asset, since the effort you put in now can continue to bring in traffic even years into the future.

The only way to “get to the first page of Google” within a short time, especially as a new website, is to buy ads on Google, which are displayed in Google search. People who tell you that they can guarantee you rank 1 on Google in organic search results are probably running some kind of scam – nobody can guarantee top position, except with paid placements that Google clearly marks as ads.

Can you do SEO yourself?
In general, earmarking 10 percent of your annual revenue (or revenue goal) for digital marketing and SEO is a good way to plan your budget for most (though not all) industries. If your website is only one of your business’s sales pipelines, then you could plan for 20 percent of the annual revenue (or revenue goal) generated by the website.
It is possible to do SEO by yourself, provided you have the time, resources, and necessary knowhow for SEO in your industry.
Does changing website design affect SEO?
Yes, changing website design can affect SEO in many ways.
Landing pages and campaigns
What is the main purpose of a landing page?
Is a landing page the same as a website?
How is a landing page different from a website?
What makes a good landing page design?
A landing page is intended to get a user to take just a single, specific action on that page. On other website pages, users can do a variety of things, like explore other links, browse through products, and so on. Landing pages are designed with no other distractions, so that there is only one action that a user can take, such as signing up for an email list, or buying a product (but not both).
Sometimes, the term “landing page” is used to refer to any page on a website that users land on after clicking on an ad. However, it is considered best practice for landing pages to be designed with only one possible action for users to take, as this makes it possible to measure and improve the effectiveness of the page in converting users, by making incremental improvements.

It is possible to create a landing page without a website. Having a website is not a prerequisite to create a landing page, although websites are good tools to let users learn more about you and your business, build trust, and eventually, convert.
Whether you need landing pages at all, and if so, how many you need, depends on the number of online sales funnels that you’re actively trying to promote at any given time. Generally, it is a good idea to build a separate landing page for each individual action (sign up for a trial, download a file, subscribe to a newsletter, buy a product, etc) that you would like users to take, especially if you are running ads to drive users to take those actions.
How much does a landing page cost?
How much should I pay for a landing page?
There are many landing page builder tools out there, which cost anywhere from AUD 100 to AUD 5000 per year or higher. Ultimately, they all do the same thing – let you build a page with a link, a form, or a button, that you want users to click.
However, it is possible to quickly and efficiently design an unlimited number of landing pages using WordPress’s powerful, built-in content editor. When you sign up for any of Lime’s website packages, you won’t need to buy expensive third-party services to build landing pages – you can do it right on your own site.
Are landing pages bad for SEO?

How does website design affect sales?
Users feel a greater sense of trust and confidence in websites that follow good design practices such as user-friendly navigation, clean layouts, clear calls to action, transparent info on contact, team, and policies. In turn, this affects how readily users will be willing to take actions such as signing up or buying a product.
